Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Let's look at this verse and see something unique about it. Can you figure it out? It begins and ends with the same word…all. What does the word 'all' mean? Everyone…no exceptions…if I said 'all', but then didn't include everyone it wouldn't be 'all' would it?
The Bible has a lot to say about 'all'. Let's look at a few of them. Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
1Jo 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Jo 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Let's look at our text verse again:
What is this verse saying to us?
I. We Have All Gone Astray
A. "All we like sheep have gone astray"
1. Sheep going astray is normal.
2. They need a shepherd to lead them, and to protect them.
3. God's Word says that we are just like sheep that wander around with no real direction in our lives.
4. We have no shepherd.
B. Remember that all means every one of us, no exceptions!
1. Not one person is righteous
Ro 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
2. All of us have sinned and come short of God's glory or His righteousness 3. Sin brought death
Ro 6:23a "For the wages of sin is death…"
a. That means physical death
b. That also means spiritual death.
4. Our sin has placed us in deep trouble
a. Apart from God's love there is no hope
b. Thankfully, He loves us so there is hope Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
II. We Have All Gone Our Own Way
A. "We have turned every one to his own way"
1. That means we have made a choice.
2. We have chosen to rebel against God
a. Rebelling against His laws
b. Rebelling against His love
c. Rebelling against His goodness
d. Rebelling against His grace
3. Rebellion against Christ when He came to save us.
a. "We will not have this man to reign over us" (Luke 19:14)
b. This attitude led to the Cross
4. This rebellion continues today
a. Some will not receive Christ and be saved
b. Even some believers choose to go their own way instead of following the way of God.
III. Jesus Christ Died to Pay for Our Sins
A. "The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all"
1. Jesus paid it all…
2. And He did it willingly!
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
1Jo 3:16a Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us:
B. We couldn't pay for our sins…only Jesus could do this for us.
1. John the Baptist described Jesus as the "Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world". Cf John 1:29
2. He became the propitiation (the only satisfactory payment) for our sins. Cf I John 4:10 3. Jesus died on the cross for you and for me, because we needed Him!
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
