There must be heresies?

I Corinthians 11:17-31

Someone recently asked me this question about our church, "Is it just me, or does there seem to be many more problems now than there used to be?" My answer, yes there seems to be more problems today than there were before, but that is not really unusual.

Tonight I want us to look at a passage of Scripture and attempt to understand why there are so many more problems, and what to do about them.

Before we get to I Cor 11, let's paint a familar scene found in the Book of Phil. (Phil 4:2-3) When we read carefully we discover Paul stressing unity of believers, and joy under trials. It is in the last chapter that you find Paul specifically dealing with one of the reasons for the letter and perhaps the primary occasion for it.

(PHIL 4:2-3) "I BESEECH EUODIAS, AND BESEECH SYNTYCHE, THAT THEY BE OF THE SAME MIND IN THE LORD. {3} AND I ENTREAT THEE ALSO, TRUE YOKEFELLOW, HELP THOSE WOMEN WHICH LABOURED WITH ME IN THE GOSPEL, WITH CLEMENT ALSO, AND WITH OTHER MY FELLOWLABOURERS, WHOSE NAMES ARE IN THE BOOK OF LIFE."

(1 COR 11:18-19) "FOR FIRST OF ALL, WHEN YE COME TOGETHER IN THE CHURCH, I HEAR THAT THERE BE DIVISIONS AMONG YOU; AND I PARTLY BELIEVE IT. {19} FOR THERE MUST BE ALSO HERESIES AMONG YOU, THAT THEY WHICH ARE APPROVED MAY BE MADE MANIFEST AMONG YOU."

The phrase in verse 18 is not so hard to understand, but what about the phrase in v19? Those words "There must be heresies" are the ones that bother me. Why "must"?

I. What does he mean?

II. That's what the words mean but why the word "must"?

I will close for now, next week we will continue to look at what we must do in response to such heresies that exist. God has specific instructions concerning how we must handle such instances.

Tonight will we honestly allow God to search our hearts? When we are confronted with such heresies do we choose sides? Or do we determine to come down on the side of God and His Word?

I have yet to experience a church split, but I have gone into ministries after there has been one and spent much time cleaning up the mess. The saddest thought is that there is no way to salvage the damage done to a church’s testimony in a community.

The world delights in seeing disharmony in the local church, because it affirms that we are no different from them! God has called us to be different. We are to be a light in the sin darkened world.

"BY THIS SHALL ALL MEN KNOW THAT YE ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YE HAVE LOVE ONE TO ANOTHER." (JOHN 13:35)
